New Rides Network : Guttermonkey.org has Launched
From the Gutter Monkey Crew
A new bike website “http://guttermonkey.org” was released tonight in Sydney, Australia to help people all over the world find riders they might like to ride with, and routes they can follow safely, using all the valuable knowledge that’s trapped inside the brains of experienced bike riders everywhere.
To do this, we’re hoping for your participation, because you’re the expert when it comes to your ride.
- Every back street you take and shortcut you ride represents the very best field research that money cannot buy.
- We want to gather that knowledge and get it into the hands of people who would love to ride each day, if only they knew how
Right now, guttermonkey.org is new, so we need lots and lots of bikers to contribute their rides to our rideFinder database as soon as possible, to start spreading the joy.
It’ll only take you a few minutes because we’ve made it really easy, and you can’t begin to imagine how useful that information is to someone who’s never ridden their bike to work before.
They can use guttermonkey.org to make contact with other people who are also interested in the same rides. They can swap ideas. They can ride together and feel safety in numbers. It’s not rocket science. It’s a community coming together, and we hope you can be a leader of our community by the simple act of sharing your knowledge with other folks out there.
Hundreds of gallons of coffee have been sacrificed to bring you guttermonkey.org. Team Guttermonkey is a community group (hopefully with a little more flair than most) and our guiding principle is to get millions more people all over the world riding their bikes on a daily basis. Bold? You bet.
We hope you like it. Especially the bit about the monkey

Live Green Festival
After a wet few days the Live Green festival was on last weekend (25th Aug) and the sun came out. It was a slow start but soon got busy and the people came out. The Lord Mayor was there and so was the BikeSydney volunteers, dispensing lots of great information to people which were interested in riding their bike.
The City of Sydney also had a great display of how the new bike lanes will look. The display was life size and they had a few bikes on trainers, so that you could jump on and get a feel for it yourself (image below).
Than you to all the BikeSydney volunteers that turned up and helped out. You helped make the day a success.

CBD CYCLE ROUTE FAST-TRACKED
This week from the City of Sydney:
The first project in a network of safe, high-quality cycle paths will soon be constructed to connect Clarence Street to the Pyrmont Bridge, with design work beginning on a vital missing link for north-south cycle travel through the CBD.
The City’s Planning, Development and Transport Committee voted unanimously on Monday to endorse the King Street route, which features two-way dedicated bike path adjacent to the footpath, and a landscaped median strip with trees and smartpoles to protect cyclists from traffic. Safe crossings have been designed for all intersections.
The path will be completed as part of a major upgrade of the streetscape, and fast-tracked using unexpended funds from the 2006/07 financial year.
The King Street cycle route, part of the City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan, will give cyclists a safe route from Pyrmont Bridge to the heart of the City. It will also connect with the planned north-south Clarence Street route to take cyclists safely from the Harbour Bridge to the Pyrmont Bridge.
Once endorsed by Council, design work will begin on this important Clarence Street link, after Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) traffic modelling concluded that the previously proposed Kent Street route was no longer feasible due to Cross City Tunnel road changes.
The City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan, endorsed earlier this year, includes projects for new dedicated cycle paths, bike parking and education campaigns to promoting cycling and safety awareness. The City has hired a specialist cycle planner and a project manager to coordinate this work, and is holding regular meetings with cyclist groups. We are also sponsoring this year’s Spring Cycle—a relaxed, fun ride on October 21 from North Sydney to Olympic Park.
