Another NSW State Govenment Disgrace

In case people have not heard. The NSW State Government are to remove the only bike lanes located in the City of Sydney. Yes, unbelievable. We have a local council (City of Sydney) who wants to increase cycling and a backwards looking state government.

The issue is that under the guise of the papal visit they want to place bus lanes down Park St, without effecting traffic. the only way that the state government believes they can do this is by removing the bike lanes, which of course is untrue. The State Government did not even have the nerve to inform the council till the last minute and then only gave them 48 hours to respond.

BikeSydney released a press release regarding this - Press Release Park St.

Also here is what the City of Sydney had proposed and obviously has been rejected by the NSW State Government.

Not sure if i’m going to miss the bike lane…
The stretch of bike lane as you pass through Hyde park is kind of nice but as soon as you hit park st the bike lane turns into a slalom track…. One in maybe every three cars get in the bike lane and it’s kind of annoying (its easier to just ride the wrong way down park st)…

Personally i’d be happy to have more bus lanes in sydney if they banned taxis and they enforced stopping cars from driving in them…. Why should taxis have bus lane rights? Cos cabcharge lobbies for exclusive rights thats why… Cars killed around 1500 people in Australia last year, and taxis don’t help solve the congestion, road safety and environmental hazard problems in any way shape or form the only reason cabcharge want to use bus lanes is so they can make more money off there already exploited (and mostly migrant) workers… Bus lanes should be for people that do the right thing by not driving. Make bus lanes exclusively for cyclists and people catching public transport and i’d be happy.

Cycling safety has barely anything to do with bike lanes unless the lanes are completely away from traffic…. Even then it just moves the problem further down the road. Cars are clearly the problem with road safety (theyre kinda fun dodging tho)… The sooner some Politicians admit this and start making changes (losing votes) the better… Gutless wonders!

Just dying to hear someone high up in politics or the media say “If you abuse the privilige of driving a motor vehicle your putting other people at risk and your a lazy idiot.”

The problem with bus lanes is that they are ade far to narrow for bicycle and bus to co-exist. A few years their was guidlines drawn up, but they are completely ignored. Also we are not going to get taxi’s, hire cars etc out of them.

People like you and me are OK to use roads where there are no bike lanes, but for the majority of people they are needed if we are to budge them out of there car and get them on a bike.

I would love to have segregated bike lines as in the picture above. I ride along these lanes daily and its very precarious with cars changing lanes or turning without looking, taxis stopping and motorcycles constantly cutting in to the bike lanes.

Do motorcyclists actually think they are allowed to use the lanes or are they being cheeky?Would be good to know if my death stares and slow riding to get in their way was warranted!
