BikeSydney Submission - Redfern Waterloo Authority

The Redfern Waterloo Authority has released its draft Concept Plan for the North Eveleigh Rail Yards, a large site that lies between the rail line at Redfern, and Wilson Street - often called Sydney’s “bicycle highway”.   Being close to rail, bus and cycle routes, the site provides a very strong basis for sustainable transportation, and the Plan envisages approximately 1200 new dwellings (2400 residents) and 3270 jobs on the site, as well retail and cultural uses.  Unfortunately, it also proposes almost 2000 car parking spaces - a figure that BikeSydney believes is excessive in such a location, and likely to have a huge impact on surrounding residential areas, as well as the movement of cyclists and pedestrians.

BikeSydney submitted our concerns to the RWA, and we will continue to monitor the progress of the Concept Plan.
Our full submission can be accessed here.

I’d like to see a total of about 20 car spaces on that site - all of them designated “disabled only”. Anybody else can walk, cycle or catch the train.

Putting car spaces in that area will ruin it for everybody else.

I both ride to work and live on Wilson St and need to park my car on the Street, I think 20 car spaces is stupid.

The 6,000 odd people that will descend on the New site in 5 years and what % have public transport (bus and train) close to where they live. Apart from laziness and the people scared to walk around Redfern at night, the executives of these new companies, they will all end up driving to work……I can’t see people with kids needing to pick them up after work taking public transport…So where do they park there car if there is only 2000 spots. ON THE STREET. You can’t stop people driving their bloody chariots from the western suburbs, special if the trains are ready like sardines. Note how many people will living on the site, two / three per house, Even if 50% owned a car, that 1200 parking spots taken already.

It bad planning either way…Redfern is going to end up like another North Ryde….Shit public transport and a night mare to get in or out off.

NOTE: Plan envisages approximately 1200 new dwellings (2400 residents) and 3270 jobs on the site, as well retail and cultural uses. Unfortunately, it also proposes almost 2000 car parking spaces

Too many cars use Wilson st as a sneaky thoroughfare as it is… Cyclists utilise that stretch to get away from traffic not dodge bogans in a hurry trying to squeeze past you as they slam on there brakes to slow down for the roundabout… Wilson st needs motorvehicle restrictions. If not put a bike path on King st and we’ll ride the short way home.

2000 spots? That’s enough space for at least 10000 bike lockers… A bit excessive dont you think?
