Advocacy

Advocacy is at the centre of what BikeSydney does - it’s why we were bought together. Advocacy takes many forms from specific campaigns, programs and events to liason with businesses and City of Sydney Councilors and staff. BikeSydney has representatives on the City of Sydney’s Bike Steering Committee and on the Traffic Committee.

As with everything we do we’re always looking out for bike riders.

What have we been up to?

Cycle Strategy and Action Plan 2007-2017

BikeSydney lobbied local government for many years to have a strategic approach to cycling in the city. The Cycling Strategy and Action Plan 2007 - 2017 is the council’s third plan in 11 years, but this time we have a city council that sees cycling as a legitimate form of transport that has shown commitment to see this plan through. BikeSydney will help make sure that this plan becomes implemented and that Sydney becomes a place to cycle.

Bike Parking

Soon you’ll seeing more poles in the city streets with bike rings attached to them. BikeSydney and BikEast have worked with the council to ensure the poles will be placed where cyclists need them most.

Valet Bike Parking

BikeSydney’s advocacy helped shape the City of Sydney policy to provide bike parking at all council sponsored events. For a fee BikeSydney can provide Valet Bicycle Parking including racking, staff, signage, set up and pull down for almost any events. Please contact BikeSydney for details

Council Elections

NSW local government elections are coming up in September 2008 We will be publishing Sydney City candidates’ responses to our cycling questionnaire in August. The questionnaire asks candidates what they think about cycling, where they think improvements need to be made and what they re willing to do about it.

Alexandria Canal

Members of BikeSydney are involved with the Alexandria Canal improvements. They are monitoring this important piece of infrastructure and making sure it gets completed - http://alexcanal.com/

What’s Important to You?

If any of these issues are important to you, let us know. There might be volunteer opportunities linked to them. And if there are other issues of importance, let us know. Come to a meeting (held the third Wednesday of the month) or drop us an email.

If you’re not yet a member, please become one. The more members, the more advocacy work we can do. The more advocacy, the more bike-friendly Sydney becomes.
