Bike Shorts

Bikeshorts1

We had a great night at the Alexandria Hotel on Friday 4 April. About 100 cyclists rocked up for some big free bike love.  It was good to see lots of folk from the Bike Film Festival. A huge thanks to Gilbert for organising the social ride from the city to the Alex via some eye-popping alley graff, to Michelle and Paul for coordinating the films, to Jen for the photos, and to everyone who helped spread the word about the event.

We’ll be having a few more film nights this year - next one will be in July to celebrate the Tour de France. Make sure you’re signed up to the Bike Sydney mail-list for alerts.

NRMA attack cycleway spending in SMH

In the SMH this week the NRMA (SMH link) and their president Alan Evans showed their ignorance and bias when it came to cycling. The link is above if you want to read the article. But straight away after, the Cycling Promotion Fund released their Media release on the article and The Greens released their media release. Apparently BNSW have released one but no one has seen it.

Today in the SMH they had a back up news (The second SMH article) report this time quoting BikeSydney (Fiona Campbell) and also there was a piece from Lord mayor Clover Moore (Clover’s Article). In the letters page of the SMH their was 7 pro cycling letters (SMH Letters). Keep the letters coming and also send a few to Alan Evens (alan.evans@mynrma.com.au), maybe he should get out of his car and jump on a bike. And I just found another article in the SMH Editorial named “On your bike in the Big City”. One of the City of Sydney Councillors (Shayne Mallard) got his letter published in th eSMH as well and you can read about it on his blog.

City Rangers now on bikes

The City of Sydney once again are making cycling more the mainstream, this time with Park Rangers.

From their website - http://www.sydneymedia.com.au

——————————————————————————————————-

Rangers in Sydney Park, St PetersCity of Sydney Rangers have added bicycle patrols to their already fleet-footed service around the CBD and across the Local Government Area.

Teams of two are now two-wheeling in Sydney and Bicentennial Parks, and along the Glebe foreshore to provide directions, combat littering and vandalism and provide education and enforcement on Council’s Companion Animals Policy.

The Rangers, who are kitted-out in special uniforms, have been trained at the same facility used by police cyclists.

“Our Rangers really are the frontline of the City’s engagement with our community. They provide many services on a daily basis that often go unnoticed and undervalued,” said City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone

Wilson Street Bike Highway at risk

The Redfern Waterloo Authority has a DA on show for the Black Smith Workshed next to Wilson St. As part of this proposal there is a car park attached.

BikeSydney have made a submission on this raising objections to the DA. The main points are

• the proposed use of the Blacksmiths’ Workshop as a car park encourages the use of cars and draws car traffic onto a quiet backstreet that is a currently an important bicycle thoroughfare;
• the Statement of Environmental Effects fails to properly recognise the potential traffic impacts,thus the proposed plan for traffic management is inadequate;
• if the additional car parking spaces are approved the safety of people travelling by bicycle will not be improved unless the angle and parallel parking on the southern side of Wilson Street be removed; and
• the traffic management on site and particularly the flow and interaction of people on bikes with cars is not well managed.

For further information visit Redfern Waterloo website

And here is the BikeSydney submission Objections to DA of Blacksmith Workshops
