City of Sydney Elections this Week

Yes it is the time that comes around every 4 years. The Council Elections. So BikeSydney have sent a few questions to each candidate asking some cycling questions

Here is what has been sent

BikeSydney are greatly interested to hear from candidates for the local government elections about their position and views about cycling.

Please would you respond to the following questions so that we can circulate your responses to our members and publicise the answers on the BikeSydney website.
1. What is your position on investment to improve the liveability and sustainability of local neighbourhoods?
2. What would you do to make it safe enough to ride a bicycle in your local neighbourhood?
3. If elected, how would you promote the benefits of cycling in your area?
4. What do you think of the pace of implementation of the current Cycling Strategy?

Please send responses by email to cityride@bikesydney.org or by post to PO Box M59 Missenden Rd, Camperdown, 2050 by 10th September. We would be pleased to discuss or provide information on any of these issues, or to answer any questions.

So anyway We have sent this to the Greens, Clovers Team, Shayne Mallard from the Liberals and the Independants.

Now Labor have their contact details suppressed on the Elecoral Commission website and of the Liberal Party only Shayne Mallards appears, no other is available. On the flipside The Greens and all of Clovers team have contact emails and phone numbers. For me this says a lot about the two ‘big’ parties and what they really think of the people in the area.

Back onto the election can I just say it has been great working with a progressive council. I for one tried to work with Frank Sartor and Lucy Turnbull, both either ignoring or just giving lip service to cycling in the City of Sydney.

Anyway check back Thursday for all the responses from the CoS candidates.

80% Favour a Public Bike Hire Scheme

The City of Sydney have been investigating the feasibility of a public bike hire scheme, similar to what is being introduced in a lot of European countries. BikeSydney commend the council on this study and hope they push forward with it.

More than 80 per cent of people favour the introduction of a public bike hire scheme in the City, and one in three people say they would definitely use it, independent research has revealed.

“Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in Sydney, with ABS figures showing a 37 per cent increase in the number of residents cycling to work in the past five years,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

“The City’s Cycling Strategy is all about encouraging greater and safer use of bikes - to boost fitness but also to reduce car usage and subsequently pollution and congestion.

“Our priority is to provide a safe environment for cyclists. We plan to create a cycle-friendly City, via a network of attractive integrated cycleways, including innovative two-way lanes for safe passage and linkages across local government boundaries.

“It makes sense that the City would seriously investigate whether a public hire scheme would work in Sydney. They are certainly booming in many other parts of the world.

CBD CYCLE ROUTE FAST-TRACKED

This week from the City of Sydney:

The first project in a network of safe, high-quality cycle paths will soon be constructed to connect Clarence Street to the Pyrmont Bridge, with design work beginning on a vital missing link for north-south cycle travel through the CBD.

The City’s Planning, Development and Transport Committee voted unanimously on Monday to endorse the King Street route, which features two-way dedicated bike path adjacent to the footpath, and a landscaped median strip with trees and smartpoles to protect cyclists from traffic. Safe crossings have been designed for all intersections.

The path will be completed as part of a major upgrade of the streetscape, and fast-tracked using unexpended funds from the 2006/07 financial year.

The King Street cycle route, part of the City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan, will give cyclists a safe route from Pyrmont Bridge to the heart of the City. It will also connect with the planned north-south Clarence Street route to take cyclists safely from the Harbour Bridge to the Pyrmont Bridge.

Once endorsed by Council, design work will begin on this important Clarence Street link, after Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) traffic modelling concluded that the previously proposed Kent Street route was no longer feasible due to Cross City Tunnel road changes.

The City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan, endorsed earlier this year, includes projects for new dedicated cycle paths, bike parking and education campaigns to promoting cycling and safety awareness. The City has hired a specialist cycle planner and a project manager to coordinate this work, and is holding regular meetings with cyclist groups. We are also sponsoring this year’s Spring Cycle—a relaxed, fun ride on October 21 from North Sydney to Olympic Park.
