Management Committee
BIKESydney’s management committee is elected at our Annual General Meeting. All committee members are volunteers.
President: Elaena Gardner
Elaena rode her bike in outback South Australia as a kid. Red sand dunes, boggy salt lakes and kangaroo carcasses seem a long way from the streets of Sydney. After a long break from the bike, she took up two wheeled transportation again in 2000 and loved the way it brought back the joy of being a freewheeling kid. Bicycles are now her main form of transport. This is her second year serving as President of BIKESydney. In 2009 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to look at bicycle advocacy in the UK, US and Canada. You can read her report here. She runs a small graphic design studio in her spare time.

Vice President: David Borella
David was seduced into cycling by the endless separated cycleways of Canberra, which to a six year old, rendered a city a universe. Reaching its outer edges required day passes, plates of gnocchi and speed; which itself required ever-improved braking. The weekly overhaul of the bike became daily, and inevitably, upon recognising the need to upgrade the mania for middle age, re-constituted itself as advocacy for cycling infrastructure. The only lesson learned was that there was no point fine-tuning that which was only ever going to be inadequate at best…. And that was just his experience as an advocate in London. Sydney has even faster and more menacing cars… We’ve even more need for the bicycle - the very symbol of, and mechanism for returning our city to the human scale. People, bikes, connections, discussions….
Treasuer: Chris Virtue
Chris loved the freedom that his bike gave when he was a primary school kid in the (then) outer suburbs of Melbourne and used to ride everywhere with his mates. There was only one rule – be home before the street lights come on. He has been living in Sydney for the last 20 years and loves the riding in the chaos of the inner west. Carless, he cycles just about everywhere and freaks people out when he rocks up to parties towing an Esky on his trailer. He works as a technical writer and wins the George Street invitational most days.
