Our History

BIKESydney was formed in 2000 to lobby for improved conditions for bicycle users within the City of Sydney Local Government Area.  At the time of our formation the City had done nothing for cycling.

BIKESydney’s efforts resulted in the initiation of the bike plan that now serves as the blueprint for the City’s network of cycling paths.

BIKESydney representatives sit on the City of Sydney’s Cycling Advisory Committee and Traffic Committee (formally known as the Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee).

Whenever new bike infrastructure is proposed we assess the plans from the perspective of users and provide detailed feedback to council.

We’ve helped identify bike parking opportunities throughout the City – many of the rings you see on poles are there because a BIKESydney volunteer surveyed the area and suggested it be placed there.

We also regularly provide comment and submissions to local, state and federal government inquiries and proposals that impact on bicycle users.

We regularly hold bicycle information stalls and cultural events including social rides, film nights, fashion parades and art exhibitions.  From 2006-2008 we coordinated the Bicycle Film Festival in Sydney. This opened our eyes to the potential of Bicycle Valet Parking (BVP) which we now provide to event managers across Sydney. We have also facilitated other bicycle user groups in other parts of Sydney to develop their own BVP service.  We instigated the launch of Bikes Botany Bay.

In 2009 and 2010 BIKESydney was nominated nominated for the Special Achievement Award by a Bicycle Organisation in the Australian Bicycling Achievement Awards.  In 2009 our Bike Valet Service was a finalist in the City of Sydney’s Business Awards.

There’s still much more work ahead if we’re to achieve our vision of a Sydney where everyone feels safe and comfortable riding their bike.

We ask every who rides in or through the city, whether for work or play, to join us at BIKESydney.  Your support will help us to continue our work and success.

You can get involved in our programs, campaigns, events and rides either by writing to us at cityride@bikesydney.org, liking us on facebook and signing up to our free eNews.  (You can view back-editions of our eNews here.)
